writing from your major

when I listen to my major what do I hear?
when I listen to my major I hear alarms going of to get people's attention, I hear people screaming and making a lot of noise. I hear people talking trying to convince others but I also hear total silence, a calmness. the people want to be heard. I hear a symphony of sounds playing, people are coming out of nowhere and join to create more sounds. the alarms are still going of everywhere. the sounds are loud but they all go together. everyone can hear it but no one runs away from it because the sounds are not going to stop so why not join them. you can hear water rising, plastic cracking, the traffic is loud but we are louder.

If I listen to my major, advertising, I hear keyboard clicking and a coffee machine running in the background. I hear papers rustling and pen scratches. I hear a corporate sounding telephone sound in the background and very faintly construction workers. Advertising is in a city, but sometimes it has work to do in the countryside as well. Then I hear footsteps and car doors closing. I hear conversations, sometimes in business meetings, sometimes between people just trying to understand the other's viewpoint and requests. I still hear the keyboard clicking. The steps get more anxious as deadlines approach. Explanations and presentations and rigid speeches to convince the audience. But sometimes i hear crowds of people talking about advertising's work. Some enjoy it and are appraising, others critique and are harsh. The talking quietes down, we're at a gala now. People discuss the latest trends in human behaviour and consumerism. Awards are being announced for the innovative ads of the year. We're back at the desk, clicking keyboards once again. A buzzing of excitement as a new project is announced. Little cogs turning as advertising takes the concept and produces ideas. I don't know what the execution itself sounds like, I just hear people discussing; probably teamwork. Sometimes the noises aren't so smooth and clear, they're cranky, something isn't working. But there's no shouting, just more angry clicking and coffee brewing, followed by elevator music and alarms that try to imitate nature's calmness.

When you touch it feels like fabric but also hurting needles that sting your finger.
It feels like neck pain when you’re sitting behind your sewing machine for hours.
It feels like pushing the pedal with your feet.

my major looks kind of chaotic. it's a mess of people trying to learn and make art and express themselves. it looks like oil paint stains on clothes, afternoons spent meditating, coffee at 10 pm.

it smells like raw materials, new exhibition space, mandarines.

when i listen to it, it sounds like infinite chatter. sometimes like static silence. sometimes like my favorite songs and sometimes like a playlist of things i've never heard of before but somehow knew already.

most often it tastes like freshly baked goods. it tastes like home.

my major touches you, not the other way around. it feels rough. it has many textures in different parts of it. it has layers which you can feel.

10 min writing without stopping about one of the text
Places and space two different terms, 2 abstract concept but component each other. Space could be anything as big or small as we want, it can be limited by walls but also limitless, place has a feeling attached it can also vary in size could be country or a house or even just a room but place includes space can’t have place without space so therefore does space define a place

We experience these 2 terms all differently due to our different knowledge and capabilities but all used our senses not all the same one due to some people being blind or death or etc, you-ti argue that we need touch and sight to experience a place or space because we need to a sense of distance and depth but if we are lucky to have all our senses there rest I’d them enhance our experience. So how does blind people do to recognise place well hearing although they cannot fully comprehend space with just hearing it already gives a lot of information due to echo and the volume of sound, depending on the volume of the sound you can guess what object it is but also how far it is giving a she did distance what disadvantage them if the fact that they do not see this object therefore can’t comprehend the 3D property of this object.

He also explain how our knowledge can influence our experience in space, a tourist will have a way different view or Rotterdam then I do as well as a geographer or architect, we are observing what we want to look out what’s out interest.

Dear social practice,

I hope everything goes well and that you are feeling healthy and safe within our presence. I can tell you that I do in yours. Maybe it is not fair to compare because after four weeks I already know the group quite well. But I am happy to tell you that the space you have created felt really safe and good.

Six weeks ago, I started with all these practices. I never had heard of this part of my study before, but as more things in life things come unexpected. This came so to.

My first practice was commercial, and I worked together with an amazing group. The theory from that practice about speculating was something that I really enjoyed learning, but to be honest not something that I see myself working in.

Next on was the autonomous practice. As far as you can go in understanding the word autonomous it was something that I enjoyed doing but in the end was too vague for me to see myself doing something in that field.

Than you came around the corner, after one week of chilling on Texel you came a little bit unwanted to be honest. My motivation to continue the practices was very low. But already from the first day you surprised me. The assignment with the postcard was really nice to do and you had my attention. You got me inspired in many ways without overflowing me with information. I am thankful for that and wanted to let you know that you are a very kind, smart and beautiful practice. I hope to see you soon again.

Best wishes,

Dear Lifestyle Transformation design,

When I met you the first time, immediately you let me touch you. you were very open, and I felt safe to do so. This first touch was something I had never experienced before. It was weird to feel something that was so soft but bumpy at the same time. During this touch I had a sense of excitement going through my body. Something new that felt good and safe.

I am happy that the last months you were close to me, so that I could touch you all the time. you are not afraid to be touched, not by only me but by all my other peers. The feelings of my touch change every time and therefore my opinion about you does so to. At these moments, sometimes you can be very confusing. Sometimes I don’t know who or what you are anymore but most of the times I can find the answer within myself as well. When I touch you, I feel that you’re searching for directing in the same way as we do and, in that sense, we’re collaborating to create something. We teach each other something and I learn from you, but you learn from me as well.

Still the overall feeling I got when I touch you, is the same one as the first time. Bumpy and rough but so soft and smooth. These are things that suits me and therefore I still feel that I am in the right place at this moment. I will continue touching you, as much as possible. I want to get to know you better and better and even create my own texture inspired by yours. Because you are inspiring. Even with my eyes closed I can feel the way you’re looking at things. The open and mindful mind you have is something I want to strive for as a future artist. Thanks for letting me touch you.

Best wishes,

Gaby Jacobs

What is a landscape when it comes down to it? Why do we find something beautiful? Is it an environment? A product? Our imagination. Our interpretation. It is usually a space and place we live in, move around in. Settle down in, or move through on ways past. It is something we all experience differently, which is why it’s so hard to pin down. Looking at but one piece of the puzzle, a single neighbourhood, following a geographer who will have a different specialized overview, focussing on the landscape and area itself, compared to a psychologist, who would probably rather be focussing on the humans strewn around. Even the way how we can best express our feelings about said landscape differ, some choosing to paint or draw, visualize their experience, others crafting or jotting it down somewhere, another through song and words, all just trying to find different ways to have our voices and most of all our stories be heard.
What does animation look like?

It looks like yellow post-its strewn around the room or haphazardly stuck on some wall. To-do lists, resources, inspiration, full on draft storyboards are scribbled on there. It looks like tracing on a light pad, the same figure over and over, eyes straining in the bright light, maybe a break? A different kind of light, that of a tablet or computer screen, as you stare at a program deciding when and where the different keyframes should be, as you scour the internet looking for visual inspiration, colour pallets, art styles, narrative points, historical animation techniques, or theoretical research. It looks like charcoal and ink stains on your hands and the couch, as you create concepts for worlds and landscapes using the more traditional means, or go outside to draw the people walking past. Or empty paints tubes and cardboard as you find yourself taking the craftier route, working on sets and props and and puppets to bring to life.

Dear social practice,

I wish I could meet you as a person. Weird, is not it?
The time in which we now live. By writing this letter I keep my distance,
but I feel that I am getting close to you.
In this time it is very important to be connected with each other,
you have taken care of this.

Made us, humans, bond with each other. Connecting in different ways.
You have made sure to get a different perspective on certain things,
to look at the world differently. To be more free in your thoughts and actions.

Connecting with each other through old habits. Being social without using social media.
Let people use their hands, get their creativity out of themselves,
then from technical equipment. You let us create something that is timeless,
a lasting memory where every word counts.

I hope our paths cross in the future.
It was nice to meet you. Thank you.

Love,

Faima
